Subject:Official visit of the President of the Jordanian House of Representatives to Cyprus

The President of the Jordan-Cyprus Friendship Group in the House of Representatives Mr. Yiorgos Lillikas, the MP Mr. Marinos Sizopoulos and the members Mr. Nikos Tornaritis, Adamos Adamou and Christiana Erotokritou, had a meeting today with the President of the House of Representatives of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Mr. Atef Al Tarawneh, who is on an official visit to Cyprus since yesterday, 6th of March 2019, heading a Jordanian delegation. The delegation is comprised of the MPs Mohammad Al Baraiseh, Ibrahim Al Bdour, Zaid Al Shawabkeh, Mustafa Al  Khasawneh, Ibrahim Al Quraan, Jarmal Qamou, and Mrs. Intisar Hijazi. The Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Mr. Mohamad Sharari El-Bakhit El Fayez and other high officials also attended the meeting. 

During the meeting, mutual satisfaction was expressed for the brotherly ties which are based on the common goal of the two countries of maintaining peripheral peace and security, in accordance with international law. The two sides also expressed the desire to further enhance this relation at all levels.

The Cypriot part noted its understanding of the disproportional pressure exerted on Jordan, as a consequence of hosting a great number of refugees and immigrants on its territory. Cyprus also expressed its support, both in the framework of the EU and generally, for reducing the consequences of the refugee crisis in Jordan. 
The President of the Jordanian House of Representatives and the delegation were briefed on the latest developments regarding the hydrocarbons’ reserves in the Cypriot EEZ, as well as the provocative actions of Turkey.

The great significance of the Trilateral Cooperation between Cyprus-Greece –Jordan was highlighted, as well as its beneficial outcomes and the prospect to evolve into a pillar of security and cooperation in the region. References were also made to the support of Cyprus to the Aqaba Process, which is an important initiative of the King of Jordan, and its contribution to fighting terrorism. 

On the Jordanian part, it was stressed that despite their small size, the two states actively contribute to the solution of great challenges and the maintenance of stability and security in the region. The Jordanian part also expressed its appreciation for the supportive stance of Cyprus within the EU regarding the refugee crisis that Jordan is facing. The Jordanian side also expressed its appreciation for the Cypriot stance on the Palestinian issue. 

The President of the Jordanian House of Representatives expressed the hope for a just and viable solution of the Cyprus issue, which will guarantee unity of people and territory. With regards to the threatening behavior of Turkey in the Cypriot EEZ, Mr. Tarawneh noted the full support of Jordan, reminding that Jordan is also facing a problem with the exploitation of its natural wealth by foreign powers. 

Finally, references were made to the efforts that Jordan is exerting to solve its water problem, the possibilities of Cypriot companies undertaking restructuring projects in the Middle Eastern region, as well as the possibility of increasing the number of Jordanian students registered in Cypriot universities.
